De Bierkoning is a special beer shop with a retail space of around 70 square meters. It's one of the smallest shops in Amsterdam. Nevertheless De Bierkoning is offering more than 1.500 different bottled beers, glasses and books. Beerlovers from the Netherlands and abroad are especially coming to this shop for their favourite drink.
In the eighties, small breweries were disappeared or taken over by the multinationals. There was a lot of dissatisfaction from the squatters movement about the low availability of homes and also low variety of beers. As there were not much good drinks available, this shop started in 1985 with the help of beer wholesaler Bierenco and also started with importing beers from Belgium.
Home brewing is emerging and this also results in more smaller breweries that are finding their way to the market. This positive flow of the Dutch beer culture is also reflecting part of the assortment.
